More than the finished surface

Our capabilities extend beyond the finished asphalt surface.

Where required, we can undertake ground preparation and stabilisation, drainage works, sub-base construction and associated groundworks before completing the final surfacing.

With over 45 years of industry experience within our family-run business, we understand that the long-term performance of a road depends on the complete pavement construction — not simply the material visible at the surface.

Working to your specification

We can work from an existing project specification.

Site assessment

Or we can assess the site and requirements to help determine an appropriate construction solution.

Factors that all need to be considered when planning road surfacing works:

  • Ground conditions
  • Expected traffic
  • Vehicle loading
  • Drainage
  • Condition of the existing pavement
New construction

New Road & Access Road Construction

Surfco Midlands can undertake the construction of new roads and access routes as part of commercial and development projects. Depending on the project requirements, works can include:

  1. Excavation and formation preparation
  2. Ground improvement or stabilisation
  3. Sub-base construction
  4. Drainage
  5. Installation of the required asphalt layers

Correct construction at formation and sub-base level is essential, particularly where roads will regularly carry commercial vehicles or HGV traffic.

Challenging ground?Where ground conditions require further consideration, appropriate testing and engineering information can be used to determine the construction requirements before surfacing begins.

Our focus is on creating a complete pavement construction capable of supporting the intended use of the road.

Ground Stabilisation & Sub-Base Construction

Weak or unsuitable ground can significantly affect the performance of a roadway.

If the underlying formation does not provide sufficient support, movement within the pavement construction can eventually result in:

  • Cracking
  • Deformation
  • Surface failure
  • Movement in the pavement

Where required, Surfco Midlands can incorporate ground stabilisation and improvement measures before constructing the pavement above. Ground conditions and available site information — including CBR values where these have been established — can be considered when determining an appropriate construction specification.

A correctly constructed and compacted sub-base then provides a stable platform for the asphalt layers above and helps distribute vehicle loads through the pavement structure.

Taking the time to address the underlying ground conditions can significantly improve the long-term performance of the completed roadway.

Indicative pavement build-up. Layer specification is set by traffic, loading and ground conditions.

Road Drainage & Surface Water Management

Effective drainage is an important part of road construction and resurfacing. Standing water and poorly controlled surface water can accelerate deterioration and, where water enters the pavement construction, contribute to weakening of the layers beneath the finished surface.

Surfco Midlands can incorporate drainage and surface-water management solutions into road and access-road projects where required. This can include constructing the appropriate surface falls and integrating drainage features to direct water away from trafficked areas and into the designed drainage system.

Where an existing road is being resurfaced, we can also consider existing drainage issues as part of the works rather than simply installing a new surface over an underlying problem.

Tarmac & Asphalt Road Surfacing

The asphalt specification for a roadway should reflect how that road will be used.

Surfco Midlands can install appropriate asphalt base, binder and surface courses according to the requirements and specification of the individual project.

  • Base course
  • Binder course
  • Surface course

Careful preparation, correct layer construction and compaction are all essential to achieving a durable finished pavement.

Road Resurfacing & Repairs Birmingham

Roads and access routes naturally deteriorate over time due to traffic loading, weather and general wear. Common problems can include:

  • Cracking
  • Potholes
  • Fretting
  • Depressions
  • Failed edges
  • Localised structural failure

Where the underlying construction remains serviceable, resurfacing can provide an effective way of restoring the road and extending its lifespan.

However…Resurfacing over an underlying structural failure is unlikely to provide a long-term solution.

We can assess the existing pavement and identify areas requiring deeper excavation and reconstruction before the new surface is installed. This approach allows defective areas to be addressed as part of the resurfacing works rather than simply hidden beneath a new layer of asphalt.

Commercial & Industrial Road Surfacing

Industrial estates and commercial developments can place particularly high demands on road surfaces. Where the pavement construction isn't suitable for its intended use, these can all contribute to accelerated deterioration:

  • Repeated HGV movements
  • Delivery vehicles
  • Turning areas
  • Concentrated loading

Surfco Midlands can undertake road and access surfacing for industrial and commercial environments, with the construction tailored to the demands of the site.

Works can also be planned and phased where practical to help maintain access for businesses, deliveries and site traffic throughout the project.
