Replace, extend or redesign

Whether you're replacing an old driveway, creating additional parking or completely redesigning the front of your property, we can manage the entire project.

That means everything from excavation, ground stabilisation and drainage through to the finished surface, edging and landscaping.

We install tarmac, resin-bound and block-paved driveways, with each project constructed around the ground conditions, drainage requirements and intended use of the area.

With over 45 years of industry experience within our family-run business, we know that a driveway isn't only about how it looks when it's finished. The longevity of any driveway starts with what's underneath it.

New Driveway Installation

A properly constructed driveway begins long before the finished surface is installed.

Before work begins, we'll consider:

  • Existing ground conditions
  • Levels
  • Drainage
  • How the driveway will be used

This allows us to recommend a construction and finish suited to the individual property rather than applying the same solution to every driveway.

Surfco Midlands can undertake the complete construction process, including:

  • Excavation and site clearance
  • Ground preparation
  • Ground stabilisation where required
  • Sub-base construction and compaction
  • Drainage and surface-water management
  • Edging and kerbing
  • Tarmac surfacing
  • Resin-bound surfacing
  • Block paving
  • Pathways and entrance areas
  • Associated hard landscaping

Practical & durable

Tarmac Driveways

Tarmac remains one of the most practical and durable choices for residential driveways. It's particularly well suited to larger driveways and properties where a smart, clean finish is required without the maintenance associated with some alternative surfaces.

Surfco Midlands undertakes both completely new tarmac driveway construction and resurfacing of suitable existing driveways.

Correct preparation is essential. All of these contribute to the performance of the finished driveway:

  • Excavation depth
  • Condition of the formation
  • Sub-base
  • Drainage
  • Edging
  • Compaction
Make it individualWe can also combine tarmac with contrasting block-paved borders, entrance details or other hard landscaping to create a more individual finish.
Contemporary & decorative

Resin-Bound Driveways

Resin-bound surfacing provides a contemporary decorative finish and is available in a wide choice of aggregate colours and blends.

It can be used for driveways, paths, entrances and other areas around the property, allowing different spaces to flow together using the same surface. Borders and detailing can also be incorporated to complement the property and surrounding landscaping.

City & Guilds

Surfco Midlands has City & Guilds training in resin-bound surfacing and understands the importance of the construction beneath the resin.

Permeable resin-bound systemsWhere a permeable system is required, the underlying construction must also be suitable for that purpose. We'll consider the complete build-up rather than treating the resin as simply a decorative layer.

Block Paving Driveways

Block paving offers a wide choice of colours, patterns and styles and can work particularly well with both traditional and contemporary properties.

It can be used across the entire driveway or combined with tarmac or resin to create borders, aprons and feature areas.

Tobermore Approved Contractor

Surfco Midlands is a Tobermore Approved Contractor, giving customers additional confidence in our knowledge and installation of high-quality paving products.

As with every driveway we construct, particular attention is given to:

  • Preparation beneath the paving
  • Levels
  • Compaction
  • Edging
  • Drainage
What's underneath matters

Ground Stabilisation & Driveway Construction

Not every property has ideal ground conditions.

Soft, weak or previously disturbed ground can cause movement within a driveway construction, potentially resulting in this at the finished surface:

  • Settlement
  • Depressions
  • Cracking
  • Movement

Where necessary, Surfco Midlands can undertake ground improvement or stabilisation before constructing the driveway above. The correct sub-base can then be installed and compacted to provide a stable foundation for the chosen driveway finish.

We would rather identify and address unsuitable ground during construction than hide a problem beneath a new surface.

This ground-up approach is particularly important for larger driveways and areas regularly carrying heavier vehicles.

Indicative build-up. The construction depends on the ground and the chosen finish.

Part of the design

Driveway Drainage & Surface Water Management

Drainage is an essential part of a well-designed driveway. Changing the size, levels or surface of a driveway can alter how rainwater moves around the property, so surface-water management needs to be considered before installation begins.

Surfco Midlands can incorporate appropriate falls and drainage solutions into the construction where required. This may include drainage channels and other measures designed around the layout and levels of the property.

We will also consider how the proposed driveway interacts with:

  • The house
  • The garage
  • The garden
  • The highway

Drainage forms part of the overall design rather than being treated as an afterthought.

Restore, don't replace

Driveway Resurfacing

If the existing driveway construction remains structurally suitable, complete excavation may not always be necessary. Resurfacing can provide a cost-effective way of restoring a tired or worn tarmac driveway.

Before recommending resurfacing, we'll assess the existing area for:

  • Cracking
  • Movement
  • Depressions
  • Drainage problems
  • Other signs of underlying failure

What we'll recommend

Resurfacing

Where the existing construction remains structurally suitable.

Localised repairs, then resurfacing

Where localised areas have failed, these may require excavation and repair before the new surface is installed.

A more appropriate solution

If the underlying construction isn't suitable for resurfacing, we'll explain why and recommend a more appropriate solution.

Driveway Extensions & Additional Parking

Many homeowners want to increase the amount of usable parking available at their property.

Surfco Midlands can extend existing driveways, remove garden areas where appropriate and create additional parking as part of a wider driveway transformation.

Careful attention is given to levels and the transition between the existing and new construction so the completed area works as one driveway.

These can also be incorporated into the project:

  • Drainage
  • Retaining features
  • Edging
  • Pathways
  • Landscaping
Redesign the frontage

Complete Driveway Transformations

Sometimes replacing the surface alone isn't enough.

We can completely redesign the frontage of a property, combining the driveway with new pathways, paving, fencing, drainage and landscaping.

For example, a transformation could combine:

  • A tarmac driveway
  • Block-paved edging
  • A resin pathway
  • New entrance detailing
  • Surrounding landscaping
One coordinated projectBecause Surfco Midlands undertakes both surfacing and hard landscaping, these elements can be completed as one coordinated project rather than using several separate contractors.

Family-run, 45+ years

Why Choose Surfco Midlands?

Surfco Midlands is a family-run surfacing and hardscaping contractor with over 45 years of industry experience.

  • Unlike contractors who concentrate solely on the finished surface, we have the capability to undertake the groundwork, stabilisation, drainage and sub-base construction beneath it.
  • That means we're able to look at the driveway as a complete construction — from the ground underneath through to the final finish.
  • Most importantly, we believe in doing the groundwork properly rather than relying on the finished surface to hide what's underneath.
